At some point more than 70% of the population will suffer from Foot Related problems.....

often leading to pain in the feet, ankles, knees, hips, back and all the way to the shoulders even. Yet only 2% will ever ask their doctor about it.

A podiatrist is a health professional who deals with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of medical and surgical conditions of the lower limbs and feet. Podiatrists provide a medical service for the feet and foot related conditions. Having skills in general foot treatments, a podiatrist can also specialize in nail surgery, biomechanical assessments and foot posture related pathologies.

Biomechanics

The foot is always in motion and under enormous pressure from the body’s weight. As we walk or run our entire weight lands on our feet up to 10 000 times a day. People whose feet or legs are not biomechanically correct, or in perfect alignment, often experience blisters, hard skin or uneven wear patterns on their shoes, pain in their feet or in other parts of the body. This can be remedied with the use of orthotics.

Skin and Nail Conditions

Common skin and nail problems treated by podiatrists include: Cracked heels, ingrown toenails, calluses(hardened skin), corns, fungal infections of the nail and athletes foot (fungal infection).

Diabetes

Diabetes can damage the nerves in your feet causing peripheral neuropathy. This can cause numbness in the feet and dry skin. Because there is a decrease in sensation in the feet, you may not know that you have injured your feet. Podiatrists often treat such diabetic patients.

Children

Podiatrists assess and can correct conditions in children such as growing pain,. flat feet, intoeing/outtoeing and toe walking.
