Disc Prolapse/Herniation

A Lumbar Disc Protrusion as can be seen on the corresponding picture on the left, is what is commonly referred to as a Slipped Disc. It can also be known as a Disc Prolapse, Disc Herniation, Disc Rupture or Prolapsed Intervertebral Disc Injury (P.I.D.). The protruding disc can then cause serious injury by pressing on the nerves or even the spinal cord itself.

Symptoms of a prolapsed disc can vary depending on the location of the herniation. They can range from little or no pain if the disc is the only tissue injured, to severe and unrelenting neck or low back pain that will radiate into the regions served by affected nerve roots that are irritated or impinged by the herniated material.

Many causes are attributed to disc herniation, mostly traumatic such as lifting a heavy object or in an accident. What is often not realized is that very minor incidents can be the cause, trivial things such as coughing or sneezing.

Sciatica

Often spinal disc injury produces more pain in the legs and feet than in the back. Pain that runs down the back of the thigh and leg is commonly referred to as Sciatica.

Disc Herniations are one major area we successfully treat and manage at Orchard Clinic. We are equipped with the latest devices including the vertetrac and electronically assisted traction, all without drugs and without surgery.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a condition in which a person's spine is curved in any direction. Although a complex three-dimensional deformity, on an x-ray viewed from the rear, the spine of an individual may look like an "S" or a "C". Typically it is classified as either congenital (caused by vertebral anomalies present at birth), idiopathic (cause unknown, sub-classified as infantile, juvenile, adolescent, or adult according to when onset occurred) or neuromuscular (having developed as a secondary symptom of another condition, such as spina bifida, cerebral palsy, spinal muscular atrophy or physical trauma).

At Orchard Clinic, we are leaders in non-surgical scoliosis treatments. We have developed a safe & effective method of treatment which can be seen at our website dedicated to scoliosis here.

Look out for regular workshops being held at Orchard Clinic to educate and assess the extent of your existing scoliosis condition.

Dr. Lau has also released a book "Health in your hands" on the topic which is available at all major bookshops and at Orchard Clinic.

Dr. Lau further discusses scoliosis on the Channel News Asia Primetime Live Program here. He has also appeared on radio and is a regular contributor to health magazines.
